ASHLAND, MA -February 11, 1992: Legacy Storage Systems is pleased to announce the release of the Legacy M.A.S.S. HFD NetSpan, a new generation SCSI based storage subsystem specially designed for the Novell NetWare operating system. This newest member of Legacy's "Hot Fix" storage family can incorporate RAID Levels 0,1 or 5. The Legacy NetSpan connects easily to file servers via a SCSI bus and can hold up to 12 industry-standard hard disk devices with a total capacity of 12 Gb in one storage enclosure. The Legacy NetSpan will be exhibited at NetWorld Boston, booth number 1527; "drive failure" and "hot fix" drive replacement demonstrations will be given during the show. The subsystem provides true "hot fix" capabilities with device-mounted trays that can readily be replaced without the need to power down the system or interrupt the network; drive rebuilding is transparent to all network users. The Legacy NetSpan will appeal to those users who require the highest levels of performance and data availability for their mission-critical applications, such as in on-line transaction processing. With a transfer rate of 10 Mb/sec., easy serviceability and a high level of fault tolerance, the Legacy NetSpan is ideally suited for the banking, airlines, and health care industries. The Legacy NetSpan can also be an integral component of a corporate system downsizing scheme, by providing mainframe data reliability at a fraction of the cost. Legacy Device Drivers Enhance NetWare SFT's Features Legacy device drivers enhance NetWare SFTs features (RAID Levels O and 1) with no need to reset the bus during the initialization of a newly replaced device. An "optimization utility" of the device driver improves disk space utilization and file access times. Legacy device drivers come standard with every Legacy NetSpan subsystem and are complemented with an NLM server-based backup management software. A basic configuration is comprised of six 480 Mb hard disks with 3 drives on either side of a NetWare span and includes a DAT tape drive for additional security; dual industry-standard SCSI host adapters are also provided to eliminate a possible point of failure; and, newly enhanced high surge "power sharing" power supplies extend fault tolerance levels. Optional RAID Level 5 Solution For users who require a RAID Level 5 solution, Legacy M.A.S.S. Array Software for Novell NetWare is available. Other options include additional hard disks and up to a total of 4 power supplies. John Whyte, vice president of technology and development, commented, "Feedback from our customers has indicated a certain comfort level by the user community with NetWare's own RAID Level 0/1 capabilities. RAID Level 5 certainly has its place depending on the specific application and the degree of storage efficiency required." He continued, "The Legacy NetSpan can easily be part of an organization's future growth path. The product philosophy is based on the current needs of Netware users allowing them to achieve zero downtime without a sacrifice in performance." Pricing Information and Availability The standard NetSpan configuration has a suggested list price of US$24,799 and is sold as a complete bundled kit and includes: six 480 Mb hard disks, Legacy device drivers, NLM server-based backup management software, two SCSI host adapters along with a DAT tape drive and data cassette. Optional devices, power supplies and RAID Level 5 software are available upon request. Please contact Legacy Storage Systems directly at (508) 881-6442 for additional information.
